Planning a Move
It helps to be prepared when moving house. The ‘AFRA Planner’ helps you monitor the progress of your preparations and reminds you what still has to be done.
Start the moving procedure early with 6 week ‘moving day’ plan:
- Use your AFRA Moving House Planning Guide to start a central file for all the details of your move
- Prepare an inventory of everything you own and what is going to be moved
- Decide and act upon the best way to dispose of the items you don’t want or need any more.
- Ask yourself if you will need storage?
- Try to arrange your move during the least busy period of the month and season. A high percentage of removals occur during the last week of any month and during the summer holidays.
If you answer ‘no’ to any of the following, it would be wise to get a quote from an AFRA member:
- Do you have at least two (strong) helpers for moving?
- Have you allowed adequate time to complete the move?
- Will your household contents policy cover for potential loss in case of accident en route?
- Do you have a suitable vehicle to move your furniture and effects?
- Will the rental truck be equipped with trolleys, packing materials and ties?
- Have you looked at all the costs carefully?
Three Ways to Obtain a Quote
- Phone - ensure you have it confirmed in writing, including the removal company’s terms and conditions of contract. Use the AFRA inventory form included in the Moving Guide Kit.
- In-Home Survey - includes a written quote after a representative of the removal company has visited your home to accurately assess your needs.
- On-Line Quote – Many companies now have facilities for you to request a quote online. The forms are self explanatory but you do need to be accurate in your details to ensure the quote you receive reflects accurately what you have to move.
The removal company’s written quote should detail all of the charges associated with your pending removal based on the information provided by you or observed by the removals consultant.
For Special Consideration:
- Your AFRA house removalist can arrange for your pets to be transported and make special arrangements for your plants. Note: Many States don’t permit plants to cross State borders. Check with your removalist.
